Erected in 1922, this developmental center was originally used as a tuberculosis sanitarium for the
area's growing African American population. In 1963 Henryton was purchased my the Department
of Mental Health and Hygiene. The sanitarium was then converted into a developmental center for
"severely and profoundly retarded ambulatory adults". Due to funding, structural instability,
asbestos, and a nationwide movement away from institutionalised asylums; in 1985 Henryton shut
its doors for good. Today, the center lays abandoned and is a target for vandals and looters.
