The Mahanoy Area school was built circa 1908 and was the main institution of education for the
large surrounding area in coal country. Some of the features that this school boasted were a
beautiful auditorium with seating for 1000, and a fully functional dentist's office. As the coal
industry began to taper off, the population in the Mahanoy area dropped significantly and the was
forced to close its doors in the early 2000s.
